Sept. 19 (Bloomberg) -- China, the world's second-biggest energy-using nation, increased electricity consumption by 10.2 percent in the first eight months of this year.
Power demand rose to 2.33 billion megawatt-hours between January and August, the China Electricity Council in Beijing said in a statement on its Web site. Power production increased 10.9 percent to 2.32 billion megawatt-hours, it said.
The country spent 187.5 billion yuan ($27.5 billion) on power stations as it added 51.8 gigawatts of new capacity in the first eight months of 2008, it said. Spending on electricity networks reached 160.6 billion yuan.
