Oct. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Viterra Inc., which last month took control of Australian grain exporter and handler ABB Grain Ltd., said the first load of barley from the 2009 harvest had been delivered in South Australia.

The first load of 20.1 metric tons of Keel variety barley was delivered to its silos at Port Pirie late on Oct. 9, the company said today in an e-mailed statement. A further 28 loads were received yesterday at Port Pirie, while grain was also delivered at Port Lincoln, Wudinna, Penong and Thevenard.

South Australia, forecast to be the nation’s third-largest grain producer this harvest, may produce its biggest crop since at least 2005, Viterra ABB Grain said citing a government agency estimate. Traditionally the first grain deliveries don’t occur in the state until mid to late October, it said.

“With Sunday’s warm and windy conditions in South Australia, further deliveries of grain are expected this week from early maturing areas,” the company said in the statement. “It will be a few weeks before the grain harvest starts in earnest.”

Grain growers in Australia are starting to gather winter crops, also including wheat and canola, with the harvest lasting until about January.

Viterra last month won shareholder approval for its A$1.6 billion ($1.5 billion) takeover of ABB Grain, acquiring Australia’s biggest barley exporter and giving it access to supply in the world’s No. 2 barley shipper and fourth-largest wheat exporting nation.
