DUESSELDORF, Germany, Aug 21 (Reuters) - The chief executive of DHL parent Deutsche Post AG has defended the company's controversial U.S. restructuring measures in a letter to U.S. Senator John McCain.
There is no alternative to the plan, which could entail thousands of job cuts, Frank Appel wrote in the letter, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters on Thursday. The plan, which envisions using rival UPS for express air deliveries, will not curtail competition with UPS, he wrote.
In May, Deutsche Post announced plans for a partnership with rival UPS as part of a $2 billion restructuring of its DHL Express business in the United States. U.S. presidential candidates McCain and Barack Obama have expressed concerns about the agreement.
