Nov. 7 (Bloomberg) -- An explosion on an oil pipeline in southeast Turkey this week was caused by a technical failure, not sabotage, the province's governor said.
The blast on Nov. 5 occurred because of sudden change in pressure, Yusuf Yavascan, the governor of Sanliurfa province, said in a phone interview last night. It disrupted supplies on the pipeline that carries crude from Kirkuk in northern Iraq to Ceyhan on Turkey's Mediterranean coast.
Oil that spilled into the waters below the nearby Ataturk Dam is being burned off, and any remaining crude will be cleaned up with sponges, Yavascan said. Officials from Turkey's state pipeline company Botas will carry out a survey of the damage before starting repairs, he said, without saying how long that may take.
